What the grants do for you is give you back some of the money that you have invested to make your home more energy efficient. The more energy you save, the bigger the return. For instance if you were to exchange your old furnace at say 40% efficiency for a new furnace at 95% efficiency, you would realise a savings of 55%. Without the government grants the furnace replacement would typically pay for itself in energy savings within 5 years. Now you can get back up to $1270 in government grants, making your pay back period only 3.5 to 4 years.
